Over the summer The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl became my favorite show. It has replaced my obsession with Ugly Betty. I absolutely adore shows about unique young women that eventually figure out their paths to success. Not only is this show hysterical. It is also so relatable. At least for me it is..I feel like I am THEE awkward black girl. Seriously, the creative genius behind this show Issa Rae placed my life on YouTube.
As much as I front in public I am the epitome of quirky. I can be really dorky around my close friends. I swear I am a mixture of Lady Saw [the Reggae Artist] and Foxy Brown [the rapper] when life gets tough. I turn into a raging poet similar to Jae; the protagonist of the show.
The web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl is currently in its second season. The show depicts the day to day challenges of J; an ambitious young woman with the determination to succeed. Similarly to most twenty-something year olds she works at a job that she hates and struggles with trying to find out what she really wants out of life. On the brighter side, she has a boyfriend that supports her and a best friend that accepts her.
The concept of this web series is just absolutely amazing. If you have yet to watch the series check out the latest episode below. You can also find them on YouTube.
P.S. From viewing the interviews with Issa Rae, she kind of just had an idea to start a project with some friends. Aside from being comical, the show became a quick hit on YouTube because it was relatable to many young women.
You know I turn just about every blog into empowerment. My advice to anyone reading this is:
If you have a skill, if you have a talent, if you have a dream go for it. Try to commune amongst people that will drive you to keep pushing. Follow your passions without fear of failure. Where there is a will, trust that there will also be a way. Someone in this universe of billions just may appreciate your work.
Best,
