There are five days left in the month and we think it’s pretty safe to say June was one of the most emotionally draining months of 2018. The news headlines this month sent people all around the world into frenzy. The revelations of immigrant children stripped from their families on U.S. soil led most of us straight to the church alter on Sunday for prayer. Losing two prominent cultural figures, fashion designer Kate Spade, and the prominent TV personality, chef, and author Anthony Bourdain, to suicide in the same week was heavy. The senseless death of 15 year old teen, “Junior” Guzman-Feliz, in my own hometown of the Bronx was heart-wrenching.

With all of the negative energy and negative events happening in the world, not to mention personal tribulations in our lives, feeling overwhelmed might be an understatement. I’ve had a few people say the U.S. is starting to feel less like home and more like the wilderness or a zoo.

Optimistically, my response is –THERE IS HOPE! It is so important to guard not only your energy, but also the energy of those around you. Both Spade and Bourdain leave behind their spouse, loved ones, and children. Their sudden deaths make us all realize the importance of checking in with those that matter the most to us. Furthermore, not only are we to check in on those we love, it’s important to honor ourselves.

If you are feeling overwhelmed and need help– seek it. Nothing is taboo in getting the help you need to succeed on your journey. There are countless programs available to anyone who may need it, including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255.

Also, did you know there are programs specific to women of color? Dr. Joy says, “my goal is to help you become the best possible version of yourself.”
